- **The defining local fact: on this peninsula the constraint is getting to the job, not the job.** Balmain sits on a narrow peninsula with water on three sides and a single land approach. It was subdivided and built out largely in the **nineteenth century**, as a working waterfront suburb, long before any allowance for vehicles.
